Marriage Traditions of Zambia

1.       Who do the marry

a.       One man and One Women

b.      Traditionally inside their tribe

c.       Marriage inside the same clan is taboo

2.       Process leading to marriage/wedding

a.       Insalamu-

                                                               i.      when the two people fall in love

b.      Nkobekela

                                                               i.      period between the acceptance from the girl and the wedding

                                                             ii.      during this period, the two people get to know each other’s family

c.       Amatebeto

                                                               i.      ritual practice

                                                             ii.      Womans family prepares a feast for the man and his family

d.      Bemba

                                                               i.      Custom that calls for the man to live with his bride’s family to prove his ability to care for their daughter

a.       Mediator

                                                               i.      Usually a loyal, trustworthy, and honest man that the man choses

b.      Negotiation between bride’s family and the go-between for the dowry

6.       Dowry (Lobola)

a.       Traditionally it is cattle or livestock

b.      Modern times, money is accepted

c.       Considered compensation to the family for raising the bride

a.       Food

                                                               i.      Bride cannot eat eggs (may affect her fertility)

                                                             ii.      Serve newlyweds a pot of chicken whose bones are then replaced in the pot and given to the brides mother

                                                            iii.      A Lozi  to eat porridge off a stone to bless the couple

                                                           iv.      Involves a lot of food and traditionally brewed beer

9.       Marriage now days

a.       Losing these traditions and forfeiting identity

b.      Christian weddings

c.       Marrying off young girls

d.      World globalization and western thinking changed traditions

e.      More divorces

                                                               i.      Divorce isn’t so taboo anymore

f.        Gender changes lead to more divorce

                                                               i.      Women want to be in charge and think for themselves
